Arifin: No Sabahans involved in IS
KOTA KINABALU: No Sabahans are involved in the Islamic State caliphate so far, said Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Arifin Mohd Arif.
Speaking after officiating at the South West Coast Majlis Tilawah Al-Quran and Maulidur Rasul celebration at Kota Kinabalu City Mosque here yesterday, Arifin said, “Thank God, through observation, children in Sabah are always supervised by teachers who actually understand the religion.”
“The Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) and Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (JHEAINS) along with Malaysia Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) will monitor the state’s religious schools, which are registered with MUIS.
“We will do this constantly with authorities like the police, God willing, to prevent our students from being involved with the Islamic State (IS),” he added.
Recent occurrence of Malaysians involved with IS is caused by the lack of understanding about the true meaning of the religion.
To them joining the so-called IS jihad is a shortcut to heaven, said Arifin.
“Jihad has a broader interpretation than that.
“Learning, eliminating poverty, the economy and business perspective, and uniting the people is jihad. Do not restrict the interpretation of jihad to war alone,” he added.
Arifin stressed that war among Muslims, violence, indiscriminate killings and decapitation of people is not Jihad. The core of Islam promotes compassion and justice.
“Actions of some have tarnished the religion to the point that viciousness, bad and evil things have become synonymous with Islam,” said the concerned assistant minister.
“So I ask that the true values of the Al-Quran be taught to Muslims.
“Learn and understand the meaning of the holy book through the right people and do not misinterpret something that brings progress, peace and unity,” he stressed.
